Crafted from a thin steel tube, 'Scope' functions in the manner of a kaleidoscope as a physical and sensory intersection between an individual, the artwork, and the world beyond and was created to coincide with his exhibition 'Blind Light' at the Hayward Gallery. Like so much of Gormley's work, this piece highlights his ongoing interest in the notion of space and how it is experienced visually, and corporally. The inspiration for 'Scope' came from an installation in part of the Hayward exhibition entitled 'Hatch', which involved an entire room of these kaleidoscopic steel tubes.
